Description
Summer dormant phalaris
Australian Phalaris is a robust, deep-rooted perennial grass designed for temperate grazing systems. It offers excellent persistence in heavier soils and under moderate rainfall conditions (≈ 450–550 mm annual) and performs well across a broad range of soil types including acid, water-affected or seasonally wet.
With its wide blue-green leaves and prostrate to semi-erect growth habit it delivers palatable feed for sheep and cattle, tolerates heavy grazing, and helps stabilise soils thanks to its strong root system. Though slower to establish compared to annual grasses, once established it gives long-term value for grazing, hay or silage use in mixed pasture plantings.
Key benefits of Australian Phalaris
- Long-term persistence and drought resilience thanks to deep roots.
- Good adaptability to heavier, wetter and acid soils, and tolerant of moderate salinity or water-logging.
- Highly palatable to livestock with wide leaves and good utilizable biomass.
- Helps build pasture base and soil structure in perennial systems, useful for mixed legume-grass pastures for improved feed quality and longevity.
