Kicking off 2025 with a new ryegrass endophyte. What does CM142 mean for farmers?

What is CM142?

CM142 is an innovative endophyte developed by Cropmark Seeds to enhance ryegrass performance, persistence, and animal safety.

Why do we think it's something to try

We anticipate CM142 endophyte will make waves in the Australian farming sector, offering high performance ryegrasses at a price point that makes sense for farmers.

New generation Stampede CM142

A new diploid perennial ryegrass, Stampede featuring CM142 endophyte is a well priced perennial option that performs as well as other high performance endophyte products in the market (based on the trials we’ve seen on Australian and NZ soil).

Notman's experience with endophytes

Having worked with other endophytes such as AR37 for the past 15-20 years, Notman Pasture Seeds has gained an understanding of how to integrate advanced endophytes into diverse pasture systems.

Real world practicality and know how

Cropmark Seeds know a thing or two, firmly establishing themselves as a leader in endophyte innovation, having developed the CM142 program in-house. This hands-on approach and their ability to take the endophyte from concept to market highlights their expertise in this field. We've been blown away with some of the work they've done behind the scenes.

Cold storage to help maintain live endophyte

Kept in cold storage in Melbourne, we work alongside Cropmark Seeds to transport CM142 seed out of cold storage only when we need it. This way together we can maintain the levels of CM142 live endophyte for longer under optimal storage conditions.

CM142 has Enhanced Insect Resistance

CM142 provides robust protection against several pasture pests, including Argentine Stem Weevil, Black Beetle adults, Porina Caterpillar, and Root Aphid.

Improved Animal Safety

With optimal concentrations of epoxy-janthitrem alkaloids, CM142 significantly reduces the frequency and severity of ryegrass staggers, ensuring safer grazing for livestock.

Increased Pasture Persistence

The natural defence mechanisms of CM142 contribute to improved pasture longevity, maintaining productivity over multiple years.

Where did it originate?

It's origins trace back to the harsh alpine regions of Greece. Harnessing the natural insect deterrent capabilities of Epoxy Janthitrem alkaloids, CM142 offers a natural defence mechanism to increase pasture persistence, which is a key attribute for perennial pasture.

Future releases

Stampede diploid perennial ryegrass first up in Autumn 2025, plus future tetraploid perennial, hybrids and italian ryegrasses planned for release by Cropmark Seeds in Australia.

New generation VATBUSTER will feature CM142 in 2025 also.
