Description

Saia Forage Oats are a tall black seeded fine stem grazing forage oat that are fast to establish and deliver good quality early winter feed when planted in Autumn. Saia Oats early maturity allows them to be suitable for late season planting.

Saia Oats rebound after grazing well making it a great forage option. For best results in a rotational grazing system, all annual cereal crops should not be grazed below the growing point located just above the highest node. Avoid removing growing points by grazing just above the first node (Heavy grazing will result in poor regrowth).

Saia Forage Oats (Avena Strigosa) can be grown in a wide range of soils – more specifically Saia Oats prefer soil pH that is slightly acid to neutral but will grow in a range of pH 4.5–8.6. Not as tolerant of alkaline soil (pH >7) as other cereals, however, growing oats for hay production is generally on alkaline soils.

  • Black seeded oat to reduce birds eating seedlings
  • Fast to establish, so ideal for late sown crops
  • Maintains vegetative growth well into spring.
  • Good regrowth after grazing
  • Ideal companion to permanent pasture on other parts of your farm

Understanding Forage Oats

Oats are a good robust dual purpose cereal for graziers around Australia that can be grazed during the winter months prior to being shut up to be cut for hay. Oats are a great source of on-farm hay production and can be blended with Annual Ryegrass or Italian ryegrass and clovers to increase yield and quality.
