Description
Brown Mid-Rib genetics. Improved fibre digestibility. High-quality summer forage.
Prime BMR is a medium-maturity forage sorghum-sudan hybrid combining exceptional biomass production potential with the improved fibre digestibility of Brown Mid-Rib (BMR) genetics.
The BMR trait reduces lignin deposition within the plant’s cell walls. Lignin provides structural strength but limits the ability of rumen microbes to break down and digest plant fibre. By reducing lignin, BMR forage can deliver improved neutral detergent fibre digestibility (NDFD), allowing livestock to extract more usable energy from the forage consumed.
This improved fibre utilisation can support greater feed intake and animal performance, particularly in dairy and beef production systems where forage quality is critical to milk production and liveweight gain.
Prime BMR combines these nutritional advantages with strong summer growth and high dry matter yield potential, making it a valuable option for grazing, hay and round-bale silage production.

Key benefits of Prime BMR
- Reduced lignin: BMR genetics reduce lignin concentration, particularly within the plant’s structural tissues.
- Improved NDF digestibility: More of the plant’s fibre can be broken down by rumen microbes.
- Greater energy availability: Improved fibre digestion can increase the usable energy obtained from forage.
- Potential for improved intake: Better fibre digestibility can help support dry matter intake and livestock performance.
- High biomass potential: Prime BMR is positioned by PIONEER as a high-yielding, medium-maturity sudan hybrid.
- Harvest timing remains important: As the crop matures, yield generally increases while forage digestibility can decline.
